How do you practice self-care?

First and foremost… YOU CAN’T BE LAZY, and you have to stick to your schedule! At least when it comes to your physical care and the health of your body. For me, as a quadriplegic… Every single morning, no matter how tired I am… No matter how bad my body hurts… I go through the same process and I have my caregivers roll me back and forth inspecting my body for abnormalities of any kind. I’m talking about pressure ulcers, sores of any kind, swelling, chafing, bruising, and even ingrown toenails. I have to, if I don’t, there’s no doubt I will end up with some kind of infection or sore of some kind.

After a thorough inspection of my body, I get dressed and then I have my caregivers give me into my Wheelchair. After that, everybody knows to give me about 20, 30 minutes to just go sit by myself and be alone… I sit and I think about things that are calming and I take in deep breaths and I just chill by myself while I wake up and prepare to take on each day. I think about my kiddos and whether or not I need to do anything for them that day and then I think about myself and whether or not I need to do anything and what it is exactly that I have to get done that day. When I’m ready, I start my day, and I do what’s needed to be done to accomplish my goals and make sure things are in order.

Food and what I eat is also pretty important to my self-care… I am also a type 1 diabetic on top of everything else. So I have to watch my carb intake very meticulously. On top of that as a quadriplegic I have to monitor my protein intake and make sure I am getting plenty of it so that I do not get pressure ulcers and things like that. I can’t really get on a treadmill or go for a run so I have to watch my diet.

Other than those few things, don’t stress… It ain’t worth it! It will all come together eventually and what is meant to be will happen the way it’s supposed to happen. Have a great day and please like, comment, and share!
