Tonight was a great night! I needed this… My children and I spent some time outside in our front yard tonight while the sun slowly slipped below the neighborhood trees. They were hitting the volleyball back and forth while I counted out loud, seeing how long they could go without letting it hit the ground. They got a high score of 119 times. I thought they did pretty good myself. After that we went inside and chilled out for a bit. I told them we should watch a movie from my childhood. I picked out Homeward Bound. I showed them the trailer and surprising to me, they actually wanted to watch it. So I had them pop up some popcorn and my caregiver ran my daughter up to the store for some candy and a soda for each of them. It was just like the movie theater ;).
We all sat there and watched the movie from beginning to end, no cell phones, no distractions, just us watching and discussing the movie. Nothing else. I really enjoyed it, as teenagers, they don’t usually just want to sit down and hang out with Dad like they used to.
Don’t get me wrong with them lots of time together, but there’s usually lots of other things going on over with other people and things like that. It gave me some time to forget about all the chaos going on in my life at the moment. It gave me a chance to relax and just focus on being a father. I really enjoyed it!
If you have children and they are in your life… Always try to make some kind of time available to spend with them at least once in awhile, special time, just you and them doing something you don’t usually get to do. I promise it feels good.
